INTRODUCTION

The old poplar poplars are made by traditional care by generations of farmers on the shores of southern Aragon. Working trees are dedicated to the production of beams, wood and fodder in rural communities.

Repeat the pruning allows the trunk and head to reach a considerable size, forming holes and cracks in addition to accumulating abundant dead wood, which keeps a community of animals, plants and fungi.

These groves form a landscape that characterizes and identifies upland Teruel. It is the result of the interaction between man and nature, a manifestation of popular knowledge and cultural heritage.

changes in rural and emerging environmental issues have led to the abandonment and decay of poplars. These living monuments are disappearing in recent years by the lack of care to renew the foliage.

farmers, managers of the rivers, forests and cultural heritage, municipalities, businesses, researchers and, overall, society must learn management experience applied in Europe to find ways to restore and enhance these old trees in a knowledge society.
